Firebase or Supabase? How to choose for your next app
Both get an app to market fast. Here is how we decide between them, based on your data, your team and how you expect to grow.
Firebase and Supabase both give you authentication, a database, file storage and realtime updates without running servers yourself. The right pick depends less on features and more on the shape of your data and your plans.
Start with the data
Firebase's Cloud Firestore is a document database. It shines when data is hierarchical and read in predictable ways, such as chat messages, user profiles and feeds. Supabase is built on PostgreSQL, so it suits data with many relationships, reporting needs and complex queries.
Questions we ask clients
- Do you need joins, aggregates or reports across many tables? Lean towards Supabase (PostgreSQL).
- Is the app mostly mobile with realtime, offline sync and push notifications? Firebase is very mature here.
- Is avoiding vendor lock-in important? PostgreSQL is portable and Supabase can be self-hosted.
- Do you want to move quickly with a small team and minimal setup? Both work, so pick the one your team knows.
Watch costs and access rules
Firestore bills per read and write, so a chatty screen can become expensive at scale. Supabase's pricing is closer to traditional database hosting. In both, security rules (Firestore rules or PostgreSQL row-level security) must be written and tested properly, because they are what keeps one user's data away from another.
Our rule of thumb
For a realtime mobile product with simple data, we usually reach for Firebase. For a product with relational data, dashboards or an admin side, we usually reach for Supabase or a Python backend on PostgreSQL. If you are unsure, a one-hour call can save weeks of rework.
