Web scraping for business data: doing it reliably and responsibly
Scrapers break and sites change. How to build crawlers that keep working, and the ground rules to follow.
Businesses use scraping for price monitoring, lead research, market analysis and aggregation. A script that works today can silently break next week, so reliability matters more than cleverness.
Build for change
- Separate fetching, parsing and storage so a layout change only breaks one small piece.
- Validate every record and alert when the share of empty fields jumps.
- Retry politely with backoff, and cap the request rate so you never overload a site.
- Store raw responses so you can re-parse without crawling again.
Ground rules
- Check the site's terms of service and robots.txt, and prefer an official API when one exists.
- Avoid collecting personal data unless you have a lawful reason and a plan for protecting it.
- Identify your crawler honestly and respect rate limits.
- Take legal advice for anything sensitive, since rules differ by country and by use case.
From data to decisions
Raw data is only useful once it is clean and reachable. Pipelines that deduplicate, normalise and load results into a database or dashboard turn a one-off script into something your team can rely on every day.
